Anything else you need to know:
What is IOSH Managing Safely?
IOSH Managing Safely is a globally recognised course that delivers essential health and safety training specifically designed for managers, supervisors, and team leaders.
IOSH, or the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, is a UK-based organisation committed to raising health and safety standards across workplaces worldwide. Through its comprehensive training programs, IOSH equips professionals with the tools and knowledge necessary to create safer working environments.
The course is tailored for managers who are responsible for overseeing the health and safety of their teams. This course covers a wide range of topics, from risk assessment and accident investigation to understanding legal responsibilities. It is structured to provide practical, actionable insights that help managers identify hazards, control risks, and implement safety measures effectively.
It is considered a basic introductory course into the fundamentals of workplace health and safety management, laying the groundwork for more advanced topics.
How to pass IOSH Managing Safely:
Firstly, it is important to understand that there are no entry requirements for undertaking this course. However, it’s important that delegates pay attention and understand the concepts discussed throughout the training session.
The course is split into seven distinct modules, these include:
- Introducing managing safely
- Understanding your responsibilities
- Identifying hazards
- Assessing risks
- Controlling risks
- Investigating accidents and incidents
- Measuring performance
Assessment one: Multiple-choice questions
At the end of the course, there is a 45-minute multiple-choice test that consists of 30 questions. In order to pass this IOSH Managing Safely assessment, you need to achieve at least 36 out of 60 marks. However, provided that you have understood the concepts and examples discussed within the course modules, and taken adequate time to revise and reflect on your learnings, you shouldn’t worry about passing the course.
Assessment two: Risk assessment project
Next, there is also a risk assessment project that must be completed within two weeks of sitting the written multiple-choice test. This requires you to carry out a risk assessment of your own workplace, identifying four separate hazards from the categories covered within the course syllabus.
These consist of:
- Mechanical
- Physical
- Chemical
- Environmental
- Biological
- Organisational
For each identified hazard, you need to establish:
- What the likelihood of an event occurring is
- Who could be harmed
- Control measures to prevent an event from occurring
- Actions to take going forward
To pass the risk assessment task, you’ll need to score at least 23 out of 38 marks. However, there’s no rush – this task isn’t time-sensitive. We recommend completing the assessment, and then taking a couple of days to reflect on your answers before submitting it. This pause allows you to review and refine your work for the best possible outcome.
How long does IOSH Managing Safely last?
An IOSH certificate is valid for life. However, IOSH recommends renewing your certificate every three years with an IOSH Managing Safely refresher course. This ensures that you stay up-to-date with evolving health and safety legislation, best practices, and guidance.
At pm Connections, we offer the IOSH Managing Safely refresher course that allows you to renew your certification without needing to retake the entire course. This refresher can be completed online or in-person, providing flexibility to suit your schedule.
For those who last took the course several years ago or for businesses seeking to maintain the highest standards of safety, you can choose to retake the full course. Both options ensure you remain compliant and continue to manage safety effectively within your workplace.
