What is your job role at pm Connections?
Health and Safety Professional
What are your main responsibilities as a Health & Safety Professional?
- Being responsible for site management (management of contractors for various clients, verifying competencies and methods of undertaking the work)
- Carrying out Fire Risk Assessments (for tenants and landlords), this is a true passion of mine!
- Developing different training materials and presentations
- Offering H&S advice and developing various H&S documents to ensure our clients are up to date and compliant with regulations and H&S Law
What is a typical day (or week) like at pm Connections for you?
- Busy, fun, and very diverse at the same time with various tasks that include travelling, and attending client sites to support on health and safety matters.
- I have recently been working in Dublin for a client supporting them in managing contractors and day-to-day health and safety tasks on a project.
- Acting in the role of H&S site manager, issuing work permits on various engineering construction projects.
- Working from head office or home with tasks such as planning for projects, writing health and safety documentation and training material.
What do you like most about your work?
- Diversity of work.
- Meeting different people and places.
- Working with the rest of the pm Connections team
What kinds of problems do you deal with?
I would not call them problems, more so opportunities for positive change, such as helping different clients achieve and manage legal compliance and engaging with contractors to make sure they are conducting work in a safe manner.
What kinds of decisions do you make?
When I am on-site making a difference when working with contractors, I am making decisions that will prevent ill health and incidents in the workplace, which promotes positive health and safety culture on a project. This makes me leave my work feeling really proud – and I look forward to heading home and seeing my beautiful family.
How did you become interested in this field?
I don’t know the precise answer to this question, but I have always wanted to make a positive difference, and I have always cared for people. I guess by tuning into my heart and soul as an “indigo child” (someone deemed to be born with indigo auras), and utilising these
typical traits such as having a strong intuition, being creative, passionate, and focused. Health and Safety are very much about wanting to make a difference and caring for people, so I guess this is a natural direction for me.
How did you begin your career?
By catching the bus from my hometown in Ljubljana, when I was 18 years old, and joining a cruise ship in Venice….the rest is history.
What skills, abilities, and personal attributes are essential to success in your job/this field?
Being punctual, hardworking, honest, and keeping up with my continuous professional development as a Health and Safety Professional and the ability to establish good working relationships at all levels.
What is the strangest request, hardest job, funniest moment, or most satisfying job you have had or
worked on at pm Connections?
Funniest part: When following my co-worker to a site in Conventry, I was hoping she would lead the way. However, we ended up in someone’s driveway and a little lost – so I decided to take control of the situation by guiding my co-worker – only we got lost for a second time! Luckily we laughed our way through it, and we found our destination, eventually! Next time we’ll be using a sat-nav!
Rewarding part: It’s super rewarding doing a great job, working for the greater good of pm Connections and our wonderful clients – and setting high standards and displaying integrity whilst working.
What hobbies/interests do you enjoy outside work?
Boxing, walking and hiking throughout different national parks, travelling and supporting NEBOSH and future Health & Safety Professionals in their studies!
