At pm Connections, we have a wealth of experience in conducting comprehensive Machine Risk Assessments for our clients.

Firstly – as a manufacturer of machinery or a designer responsible for modifying any existing machinery, you are legally obligated to ensure that all of your machinery has been adequately risk-assessed during design and before any modifications have been made.  This is outlined in the BS EN ISO 12100:2010 Safety of Machinery standard, The Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations (1999) and CE/UKCA Marking Directives/Regulations.

What is a Machine Risk Assessment?

A Machine Risk Assessment is a systematic evaluation of all of the hazards associated with a machine, complete with a detailed analysis of the risks associated with these hazards. These risks would then be evaluated to identify how likely they are to occur and what measures are needed to prevent or eradicate them.

How often are Machine Risk Assessments required?

Machine Risk Assessments should be considered a living document and therefore be updated regularly. Whilst there are no official guidelines as to how often a risk assessment should be carried out, the frequency at which you conduct them is likely to vary depending on the nature of your machinery.

The following trigger points should also prompt a machine risk assessment:

  • Any accidents or near-misses occur
  • You’ve planned to modify the machinery
  • Legislative requirements and guidance changes

It is important that you determine your own frequency and interval between risk assessments. By being proactive and responsive, you will help to prevent avoidable harm.
