Confined Spaces review and register development

Without the correct measures in place, confined spaces can be deadly. Here at pm Connections, we ensure that your employees are safe whilst working within confined spaces, as well as helping you to meet the requirements of the Confined Spaces Regulations (1997).

Comprehensive and thorough Confined Space reviews to keep your staff safe whilst at work

As a business owner, under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (1999), you are legally obligated to carry out a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks for all work activities and to implement any measures that are necessary for safety.

Confined spaces make particularly challenging working environments and come with their own unique set of risks and hazards. It is your legal duty, according to the Confined Spaces Regulations (1997), to ensure that your employees (and those who may be affected by the work you carry out as a business) are safe whilst working in a confined space and to adhere to specific regulatory requirements.

What is considered a ‘confined space’?

Any space of an enclosed nature where there is a risk of death or serious injury from hazardous substances or dangerous conditions, such as a lack of oxygen. Examples of confined spaces include:

  • Storage tanks
  • Silos
  • Reaction vessels
  • Enclosed drains
  • Sewers
  • Unventilated or poorly ventilated rooms
  • Combustion chambers in furnaces

There is no comprehensive list of what constitutes a confined space, but if an area is restricted and poses a risk to people due to hazardous conditions, then it is important to review it and verify that it is safe for your employees and contractors to work in.

What are the dangers of working within a confined space?

  • A lack of oxygen
  • Poisonous gases, fumes or vapour
  • Fire and explosions
  • Dangerously high temperatures
  • A sudden filling of space by liquids or solids
  • High concentrations of dust

What is a confined spaces review?

Here at pm Connections, our team of Health & Safety experts understand the unique risks associated with working within confined spaces. We offer fully comprehensive and efficient confined space reviews and confined space register development to ensure that you are fulfilling your legal obligations to keep your employees, contractors, visitors and members of the public safe.

During a confined spaces review, we can assess your workplace for potential risks and help provide practical solutions and mitigative actions to avoid hazardous working conditions. A site visit would be arranged to review locations that may be defined as CS and what control measures should be considered when planning to work in these areas/conditions. We will tailor this to your needs and can review and update the Site CS Register if required or develop one for you.

We would then present the documentation to you, with a review meeting with you and your site team if warranted, to ensure your management team are aware of the register contents and the control/mitigation measures recommended.
